WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S STRENGTHS?:

Confidence, compassion, and courage are three of the pillars of strength when it comes to Izzy; most of her other strengths are off-shoots from those three characteristics.

Confidence is something that Izzy manages to put out into the world no matter what she is doing. From the way that she carries herself, to her clothing choices, to the things that she says and does…she doesn’t doubt the decisions she makes, the things she says, the clothes she wears, or anything. Izzy grew up being pushed to be the best, to live up to the best, and to not make any of the same mistakes that her parents made. So, she knows that she was raised to be the best. She knows that she has a great deal going on for her. She was taught to embrace that, use it, and to be a Lightwood. Lightwoods break noses and accept consequences, period. Despite that she was also never good enough, which drives Izzy to continue to try with a dogged determination and stubbornness no matter how many times her mother makes snide comments or looks down on the choices that she makes. This is just pure resilience on her part--using that confidence in what she knows and feels to keep moving forward. If she didn't have that she would have probably been driven nuts by the rules and regulations of the Clave and her parents. She is a person who grew up in abnormal circumstances, so it is all that she knows and it is the world she is most comfortable in. However, despite growing up in this world she does see the imperfections and the things that are wrong with it. She's had a lot of pressure to be better and to make a difference put on her shoulders and she takes that to heart.

That leads into Izzy's compassionate side, which feeds not only into just how much she cares about other people (and the motherly instincts that she has toward others), but also the moral compass that she has internally leading her to feel strongly about justice as well as what is clearly right and wrong, in her mind... Despite how surface-level Izzy comes off at times she is a caring person who really has a deep well of feelings, thoughts, and possibilities that people don’t always see. She seeks out and yearns for the attention and the love that she didn’t get from her own mother, so she gives that out freely to those she truly cares about. And the attention that she didn't get from her parents....well, that's exactly why she is the way that she is...all over. She is a protective sister and friend who is willing to do whatever she has to to be there for and to take care of those that need her. Her brothers are the most important people in her life, her friends coming just after them, because they're all that they've really had growing up. She is not a person that is used to, or who accepts, failure. She has an understanding of emotions, particularly in other people, that makes her good at helping others and being that shoulder. Izzy finds it almost impossible not to comfort others when she sees them in emotional states of any kind; this is amplified when it is someone that she cares about. She speaks up and she breaks rules if she has to for those that she cares about because she will not leave them hanging, especially if they are not in the wrong. Often times she can be a bit of a moral compass for people around her because she has such a firm sense of what she believes. This often times battles with her intelligence, the rules she was reared with, and other aspects of her life as a shadowhunter...but she preserveres and does not give up. Isabelle is loyal to the end when it comes to her friends and her family, especially her brothers. She balances being a fighter, intellect, and a whole hell of a lot else, and isn’t a person that anyone should underestimate because she is almost always ready with a new surprise.

Courage is something that Isabelle puts out there any time she steps out of the institute to fight. She can take care of herself because she has had to, both because she is confident and because she has courage. She’s not a person who isn't afraid, nor is she a coward by any sense of the word; she does what she has to do because of all of the diferent core aspects of her personality make her the sort of person that can't let those things stop her. In fact, she borders on cocky in the way that she deals with intense, and scary, situations. Lightwoods aren't cowards, they don't show fear, and they do what needs to be done...that's just the way she was trained. Sometimes this can work in her favor, though, because it helps her find that inner strength. It isn’t that she doesn’t see the potential for things to go wrong, but that she feels prepared and focuses on what she does know when forming her plans to move forward. She is a strategist, even if that isn’t one of the words that come to mind when someone sees her. The philosophy to act a certain way and eventually you’ll feel that way could definitely describe the middle Lightwood child. She’s independent, smart, flirty, and she has an extremely large bag of tools at her disposal.

Her confidence, compassion, and courage combine to show just how capable she and make her a force to be reckoned with. She is someone who is dependable, loving, supportive, loyal, kind, and the girl that you want on your side.

WHAT ARE YOUR CHARACTER'S WEAKNESSES?:

Isabelle's biggest weaknesses are avoiding her own emotions, selflessness, and recklessness. These three traits are the biggest faults that Izzy has and often times connect to one another.

As someone who cares deeply about others emotions, and who does what she can to fully support those around her that she cares about, one would think that Izzy is an emotionally healthy person herself. That is not, actually, always the case. Often times Izzy has put her own feelings, emotions, and problems aside in order to focus on others. Her avoidance with her own emotions can sometimes directly feed into her selflessness. Izzy is the sort of person that deals with other people’s emotions quite well and willingly, but her own aren’t always on the list of priorities. She actively avoids the feelings of inferiority, disappointment, and everything associated with her mother rather than dealing with her own hurt feelings in that particular aspect of her life. It's more likely for her to go to someone to talk about their feelings than to speak on any difficulties or problems that she is experiencing at any given time. She doesn't place her own problems in front of anybody elses, instead making herself available for everyone else at any given time when they need her and not asking for the same in return, generally. Though she cares about her looks, her mental health and emotions can often be put to the wayside in favor of other things and people first. And this is not a healthy way for her to deal with things, and though she is somewhat aware of this she has made no strides in fixing it.

She can be selfless to a fault at times. She does what she has to to make things better for those that she cares about and is the sort of person that will give up something for herself or her happiness for her family and those she loves. She has done this in various different ways. She gave up a lover in order to please her mother, for the family name. She gave up her clothes, her way of expressing herself, in order to be the person that her mother was trying to push her to be. Izzy takes great pride in her attire and her style and she was willing to give that up in order to try and make the Lightwoods appear better and to save Alec from having to marry--she did what she could to stand up to help her brother, attempting to sacrfice her own happiness for his. It is not uncommon for Isabelle to be the go-to for those that she cares about because they know that they can count on her to be there no matter what. And this is despite anything that may be going on in her own life or with her own emotions, as said in the previous paragraph. So, Izzy is a selfless person, and this is a weakness because it has made her unhappy on more than one occasion, giving up people or things that she enjoys or cares about in favor of the 'greater good' or to please/help others. She doesn't always make putting herself first a priority, instead dropping things that she might be doing for herself in favor of other things and other people being given more importance and this leaves her feeling less fulfilled than one might think.

Recklessness is the final big one for Izzy. She may manage to be a great strategist in the moment when it comes to fighting and planning out her next move, but when Izzy feels strongly about a subject and feels there is a need to act she has been known to act impulsively and in a reckless manner. There have been many times in her life that she has followed Jace into reckless action... Alec following behind as the voice of reason. Izzy comes from a place of action and though she is intelligent, she is someone that is ruled by emotion at times, and that means that she doesn't always take the time that she could. It's because she cares so deeply that her usual intelligence and patience get pushed to the side in favor of making some sort of difference (or at least attempting to).

Izzy is not a perfect person and her main weaknesses, though some might find to be strengths in some occasions, can bite her in the ass and have before. They are things that she needs to work on, but things that she does not address and has not attempted to remedy or change just yet at this point in her life. She can come across frivolous, shallow, and nosy on occasions, but for the most part those particular aspects of her personality either are surface level and put forward before someone gets to know the real her, or done because she cares (particularly about others, when it comes to being nosy).

WHAT EVENTS OR CIRCUMSTANCES IN YOUR CHARACTER'S PAST HAVE IMPACTED THEM THE MOST?:

• A general circumstance in Izzy's life that has had a major impact on her is her rocky relationship with her mother. Izzy and Maryse butt heads about everything that they possibly can. Her mother feels as if she's too much like her when she was young and as a result of this fact she is hard on her daughter. There is little that Izzy can do that her mother cannot find fault with. Underneath her confidence Izzy has a yearning to please her mother and at times this has caused her to push herself to be and do things that are not always necessarily what she would choose. There is not a loving relationship between the two women and another result of the lack of motherly love has made Izzy make up for it by being a caring person with her siblings and friends. She gives out the maternal love that she never got. Izzy is paying for her mother's mistakes in many ways, being pushed along with her brother to 'fix' the Lightwood family name after her (and Robert's) mistakes and these all have caused a back and forth within Izzy as to whether or not she will be her own person or change herself to please others. Ultimately, being herself has won, for the most part, but this to this day the result of her strained mother/daughter relationship has an effect on her.
• Meeting and befriending Clary is yet another major event that has impacted Izzy's life. Izzy, quickly, befriended and took the other girl under her wing to help her learn what she needed to about being a shadowhunter, welcoming her to the little group that had always comprised of her and her brothers. Clary is one of the first women that Izzy has managed to form a close relationship with, something that Izzy had always wanted, but never quite found before Clary came along. Along with finding a female friend, Clary was also the catalyst for some major changes in Izzy's life, creating more chaos and much less of a routine because with her came a more pressing problem that the shadowhunters had to face as a whole and Clary was at the head of it all, unfortunately. As her friend, Izzy's managed to become a part at the forefront of that struggle as well, along with her siblings.
• Deliberately disobeying the Clave in order to save her former lover Meliorn also had a huge impact on Izzy. This was the first time that she actively chose to go against the Clave, her brother, and to do what she felt was right period. She and her adoptive brother Jace orchestrated a rescue mission, fighting against some of their own people, and ultimately Isabelle was the only one arrested for freeing him. This, in actuality, was a ploy to get the Mortal Cup, meaning that Izzy was no more than a pawn. Despite that Izzy went through the trial and came close to being de-runed and cast out; this is when Izzy let go of what her mother expected of her and chose to firmly do what she felt was right, rather than just what she was ordered to do. This time not only reaffirmed Izzy's sense of justice and doing what was right no matter what, but it bonded her brother and her, as she had to let him take care of her and put her trust and faith in him to help her get through the ordeal. He was strong for her throughout the trial, being sure that she was not alone even though they had been on different sides of the initial issue.
• Almost losing her brother is another major event that impacted her life. Though she behaves as if she is independent the truth is that Alec is the most important person in Izzy's life that she truly depends on. He is the one person that she's always had and who has never failed her, been disappointed in her, or looked down on her in any way. Alec, in many ways, is Izzy's rock and the thought of losing him was never something that she could accept. She couldn't fathom, or even entertain, an outcome in which she wouldn't get him back, in which he wouldn't wake up. Like Alec was there for the trial, Izzy was there for her brother, doing whatever she had to do alongside Magnus to be sure that her brother was not going to die without Jace, his parabatai. Desperation to keep her broter alive motivated her actions during this time. This meant not only trying to trick the new head of the New York Institute, but making whatever deal she had to because losing Alec wasn't something that Izzy could handle. For once, Alec was dependent upon her and Izzy had never felt that weight before, of him truly needing her to act in order to assure his safety because he couldn't do it himself--he was dependent upon her. Ultimately, it meant turning Jace over to the Clave in order to save her other brother. She betrayed Jace in order to assure that Alec wouldn't die. This is another instance in which she went against the edicts given to her by her superiors because of what she felt was right for her brother (her family), but even more this tested exactly how far Izzy would go for not only Alec, but Jace as well. She didn't do enough for Jace, in this situation, and she knew it. Even though the agreement she made would protect him from the wolves she helped the Clave capture him and it didn't feel right to her. Izzy doesn't regret doing whatever she had to do in order to keep Alec alive, but she does feel disappointment in herself because she was unable to protect Jace as thoroughly as she protected Alec in this situation. She's disappointed in herself because she was not smart enough to actually trick Aldertree (the new head of the institute), and because she had to compromise (and do something she was not proud of) in order to save Alec. Her best efforts weren't enough, so she had to bend. She failed and she didn't measure up to Alec, Jace, or the Lightwood name. She couldn't protect both of her brothers on her own terms and that is hard for Izzy because she wasn't used to failing, even if this isn't a complete failure on her part because both brothers came out unscathed. She accomplished what she needed to, but at a price. This is the closest that Izzy has ever come to truly losing those that mean the most to her in the world. This instance shows, not only, just how far Izzy will go for her family, but just how much she is willing to do for them--putting her morals to the side and being unhappy with herself, and her choices, to be sure that she doesn't lose anyone that she loves.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOUR CHARACTER?:

Izzy is motivated, primarily, by her moral code. She is very much guided by what she feels is right and wrong and the pursuit to act accordingly to where she falls on the scale. Izzy is the person that carries the problems of those she cares about, as well as her's, on her shoulders and does what she can to act accordlingly. Izzy actively seeks justice even if it happens to clash with the law, rules, or those that she cares about. Even Izzy's weaknesses when it comes to not prioritizing her own emotions and being selfless connect to her moral code and her sense of what is right; Izzy doesn't want to be her mother and to make the unfeeling mistakes that she has made, so she actively seeks to do the right thing in being a caring person toward others because (in her mind) that is a wrong she is righting in doing better. Izzy also has gone against her family, on occasions, because she felt as if they were wrong (despite the law being on their side in the case of Meliorn). Her emotions feed into that moral code often and color her reactions, but ultimately Izzy is motivated by what she believes and the morals that guide her decisions and the way that she views the world and the things that happen within the world. She will always strive to make a difference when she sees something that she feels, truly, is wrong and to do the right thing even if that is not always accurate through the eyes of others.

WHAT IMPRESSION DO OTHERS TEND TO HAVE OF YOUR CHARACTER?:

Izzy, upon first impression, doesn't seem to be a particularly intelligent or serious person when a person takes in just the way that she carries herself and the way that she dresses. Many a time Izzy can give the initial impression of a shallow, flirty, attractive woman who only cares about frivolous things like her makeup, shoes, clothing, and that ilk. As a tendency, Izzy doesn't lead with her intelligence, capability, or the serious side of herself. So, much of the time she is more likely to be seen as someone who you wouldn't want to count on that may even seem irresponsible because of the way that she looks and speaks, in particular. She can come across as a playful young woman with little that she has to worry about on a regular basis to people, truth be told, because she carries herself in a specific way and because of the way that she dresses. For some it is difficult to get passed the stilettos and the stylish way that she dresses, along with the generally revealing clothing. She, generally, does not inspire a great deal of confidence in her ability to be dependable, understanding, or more than what she's wearing.

IN WHAT WAYS DOES THAT IMPRESSION DIFFER FROM WHO YOUR CHARACTER REALLY IS?:

In some ways the impression that Izzy puts out there for people is a defense mechanism so that people can’t hurt her, and so that they don’t see what is deeper. That, in some ways keeps people from knowing what may be coming with Izzy and gives her the upper hand and in other cases as a facade. She uses her appearance to her advantage in many situations, unabashedly. In reality Izzy is an intelligent, caring, and extremely capable individual that you can bank on in any given circumstance because she will always be there as a supportive friend, fighter, and more. She does care about things like clothing and makeup, but they are not the priority in her life and unlike how she might come accross initially. Isabelle does know how to be serious, she is dependable, and she is someone that takes life much more seriously than anyone might know because she doesn't share that part of herself always. She isn't actually a shallow person, there is much more underneath the beautiful surface that she puts out there for people to see, and to dig deeper to find.

HOW DOES YOUR CHARACTER HANDLE CRISIS OR ADVERSITY?:

Izzy handles crisis and adversity with action and the desire to do something to help the situation. This can feed into her reckless weakness because she sometimes does this on emotion without taking the time to stop and formulate an exact plan, instead figuring that she can form that in the moment. Isabelle very much reacts emotionally with the need to act and do something to fix a crisis or face adversity, but it is because she believes in what is right and wrong. Her moral code and need for a sense of justice make it hard for her not to want to act; in a situation that clearly requires that she not act immediately, Izzy can be a strategist and wait, despite her emotions, but she still comes from a place of action pushed by her moral compass. She allows that desire to act, that moral code, and everything to lead her.

WHICH 5 THINGS WILL YOUR CHARACTER REMEMBER UPON ARRIVAL, AND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THEM?:

• Her name is Isabelle Lightwood and she has two brothers (Alec & Max), along with an adoptive brother named Jace. She loves them very much, feels protective of each of them, and would do anything for each of them. Family is of the uttmost importance to the Lightwoods, as well as to Izzy herself. Most of her life her brothers, particularly Alec and Jace, are the people that she had on whom she could count on that will always be there for her and the same for her in return. Her brothers are more than just family, they're also her closest friends, so they are an incredibly important part of Izzy's life and memories.
• She is a shadowhunter/nephilim. She will know the title, but not understand exactly what the title means or the responsibilities connected to being a shadowhunter. This is an important part of who Izzy is because she was raised aware of what she could do and what she could be as a nephilim. It is a large part of why she has such a strong moral code and believes in justice and what is right and wrong, along with a reason that she feels the responsibility to act on what she believes is right and to protect others and act.
• She remembers being put on trial by the Clave (though she isn't quite sure who, or what, the Clave is at first). Izzy will have the distinct feeling that she was doing something that she felt was morally right, but beyond that will not remember why. She knows that she was facing being cast out and some sort of painful process if she were found guilty, but ultimately Izzy is not entirely sure what the verdict was. This is one of Isabelle's defining moments in the television show; she actively pursued what she felt was the right thing to do despite the fact that it went against the governing body of the shadowhunters and her older brother (whom she loves very much), she went behind his back to accomplish this, and yet he still supported her all throughout the trial. Izzy believes so firmly in her moral compass that she is not afraid to rebel when it's what she knows is right and this is an important part of who she is as a person. Izzy does what she knows is right no matter the consequences, especially for those that she cares about.
• She remembers that she knows how to use a whip. Izzy is a master with the electrum whip, and it is one of the skillsets specific to just her and not shared by all shadowhunters; it sets her out as an individual.
• Izzy will remember crime scenes, autopsies, and all of the scientific skills that it takes to be a forensic pathologist in bits and pieces. She will not, however, remember that she is a trained forensic pathologist at first. Izzy, canonly, is called "the best forensic pathologist in New York City", which exemplifies just how intelligent she is. She is one of the only shadowhunters that is shown to have a real interest in science, which makes it a unique aspect of her character. Even if she doesn't remember why she knows the information it isn't something that she is likely to forget about herself completely.

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU FEEL WE NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR CHARACTER?:

SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PHYSICAL WEAKNESSES:

Isabelle isn't just your average human. She's a shadowhunter. What does this mean? This means that Izzy is a nephilim, basically. This means that she was born not only with human blood, but with angel blood as well. Isabelle Lightwood comes from a long line of prestigious and important nephilim, at that, meaning that she carries pressure to be the best and lead even among other shadowhunters. The task of shadowhunters being to preside over the Shadow World and the demons and downworlders that inhabit that world. Nephilim keep the peace and assure that all of this is hidden from the mundanes, the average humans. Shadowhunters aren't expected to do this with little to help, though, because nephilim are born with a few special abilities to help them achieve their goals:

• Physiology: Nephilim are born enhanced physically and mentally in comparison to mundanes. This means that Isabelle has more strength, more agility, more stamina, and an increased coordination that an average human would ever have. She is by no means some all-capable and all-powerful being, but through training and practice she's mastered a complete control over her body and what she's physically capable of doing. She can push harder, train longer, jump higher, run faster, run further, and do things that not even some of the most advanced of humans would be able to do. Some of this is just naturally endowed on her through the blood that courses through her veins and what isn't comes through other means. This also means that Izzy is built to fight; with all of these physical enhancements she is literally bred for hand-to-hand combat and to be able to handle a lot when it comes to fighting. Despite all of this, she is still mortal and though she can endure more, she can be fatally wounded and killed.
• Runes/Runic Magic: Runes are one of the ways that push nephilim into the advanced area that they fall into. What they aren't naturally endowed with through the angelic blood they can give themselves through marks that the use of a stele. The runes that shadowhunters apply to their skin give the user an added push in whatever way that the rune stands for. There are runes for stealth, camouflage, etc. These marks that they apply to their skin do not harm them (though they are somewhat painful to apply initially) and remain where they are put to be called upon again whenever the shadowhunter might need them in the future.
• Sight: Because she is a nephilim, Isabelle has the ability to see through magical illusions and glamours. You can't hide who you are from her through those means. This is a skill that didn't come naturally, but with focus and years of preparation and training comes relatively automatic at this point. Being a shadowhunter that was trained from the moment she was born, it is extremely hard to get any sort of magical means of hiding who you are in any way passed Isabelle. She can see through those and traps of the same ilk easily. It doesn't require an actual access to any rune, just concentration.
• Heavenly Weapons: As an individual with angelic blood she can handle the heavenly weapons. It almost goes without saying that your average person can't use these to their utmost potential, but Izzy can wield them all effectively and sillfully through both her enhanced physical means and the years of training that she has under her belt. No other species can wield them to their proper effect but nephilim. One example of such a weapon is a seraph blade.

Outside of her natural given talents that come from being a Nephilim, Izzy has several other abilities and skills that are specific to her. These aren't necessarily magic so much as they come from time and practice, plus education. The following are examples of these talents:

• Electrum Whip Expert: Izzy has mastered the use of an electrum whip; she wears the whip that she uses as a bracelet that turns into the whip when she needs it. Because her experience with it and the massive amount of training, the whip is her preferred weapon of choice. It is definitely her go-to in battle; she only moves onto the other weapons that she is capable of using when the whip isn't an option for whatever reason or it needs to be a blade of some sort. Isabelle can use the whip not only in fighting, but in creative ways to help take out enemies stealthily.
• Forensic Pathology: Izzy is a trained and educated Forensic Pathologist. Her brothers have boasted that she is the best one in New York. At the New York institute she performs the autopsies on shadowhunters and downworlders alike; she's aware of the physiology of people as well as of downworlders of various types that wind up in the institute for examination. This means that she has medical training that she worked hard to learn. Isabelle is passionate about this job and she is curious about each and every autopsy she does, determined to find the cause of death. She examines not only the body but any evidence that comes from the body using various lab equipment.
• Bilingual: Izzy speaks both English and Spanish fluently. She's also well-versed in medical terminology. Though speaking with fae is not another language she is also keenly aware of phrasing when it comes to different sorts of downworlders and how to communicate with them to get what she wants, or needs.
• Manipulation/Information Gathering: Izzy is a skilled seductress and is highly trained when it comes to getting information out of others. She can do so not only through seduction, but through whatever means necessary. She's extremely good at getting what she wants through whatever means that she needs to use. Isabelle does what she has to do when she has to do it for herself, her brothers, the Clave, or whatever. This comes from her personality and through learning about people and growing rather than through specific training, though.

Both Izzy and her brother Alec have been trained in all of the administrative, political, and other skills, policies, and laws so that they are prepared to run the New York Institute. Izzy and Alec have been doing so for some time already, actually. She has various experiences with computers, technology, and everything that is needed to run the institute. Some other various odd and ends skills that Izzy can boast are: high fashion, dancing, make up, party planning, organization, and a multitude of other skills that fall under some of the skills and areas that have already been listed.
